Job Description:
The Assistant Winemaker is a vital member of the four-person winemaking team; alternately leading, running and supporting all activities of winegrowing and winemaking operations. This person follows the direction of the Vice President of Winemaking in ensuring the quality of our wine from vine to bottle.
Primary Responsibilities
Winegrowing and Winemaking
´ Support the Winemakers in winegrowing, winemaking, and wine-processing operations to deliver the highest quality fruit to the winery and the highest quality wine to the client.
´ Participate in wine tasting at all stages throughout the winemaking process and evaluate and assist in making recommendations.
´ Contribute to the continuous improvement of the winemaking processes and procedures.
´ Actively participate in and provide input regarding research and development, quality assurance and improved processes, operations, standards of practice and manuals.
´ Manage, conduct, track, and report on all laboratory analysis.
´ Maintain wines within internal highest standard specifications.
´ Inventory and purchase lab supplies and chemicals
´ Collect and present juice and/or wine samples for analysis and tastings
´ Work as a team with Winemakers on all blends to ensure wines are being perfectly prepared for bottling.
Harvest
´ Responsible for soliciting and screening applicants, orienting, and coordinating a crew of seasonal workers.
´ Assist in the supervision, training, and mentoring of all cellar employees during harvest, providing ongoing instruction and support as assigned.
´ Coordinate grape maturity analysis
´ Manage grape receival and processing operations during harvest, as assigned.
Hospitality
´ Support Private Client Relations and Hospitality, with a limited schedule of on-site tastings and event attendance on behalf of the winery.
Safety
´ Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental and safety regulatory considerations.
´ Instruct staff in safe work practices and enforce safety rules
´ Conduct monthly workplace safety audits
´ Investigate accident/injury/near misses and complete reports
´ Responsible for monthly and annual compliance reporting.
Equipment and Facilities
´ Operate, maintain, and assist in repair of winery equipment
´ Coordinate equipment servicing

20% Harvest internship recruitment, supervision and training
5% Vineyard management support and reporting
5% Events, and tastings
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience
´ Five years of relevant winery experience.
´ Impeccable attention to detail
´ Outstanding work ethic
´ Motivated, independent, self-starter with a sense of agency and advanced problem-solving skills
´ Creative and collaborative; a verifiable team player
´ Available for extended hours and weekends during harvest
´ Highly proficient in or willing to learn Microsoft Excel
´ Valid Driver's License and clean DMV record
´ Must be at least 21 years of age
´ Must be able to safely lift 100 lbs., stand and walk for long periods of time
´ Must be able to operate a forklift
´ Must have or obtain an OLCC permit
Working Conditions
Working conditions include office environment, processing facility, vineyard, cellar and some event engagements.
