The Implantable Technologies Audiology Supervisor's responsibility and scope includes management and supervision of audiologic and auditory-verbal therapy services for cochlear implants and bone conduction hearing devices and the clinicians who provide those services across the Michigan Medicine enterprise. This position is charged with managing and evaluating the administrative, clinical, financial, operational, and strategic activities of the Implantable Technologies Program. The responsibilities of this position are split between clinical caseload (50%) and administrative/supervisory duties (50%). The position includes on-site supervision of the Briarwood Hearing Rehabilitation Center which is a multi-disciplinary team of audiologists, speech-language pathologists, hearing device technicians, and support staff.  This center serves both adult and pediatric patients, providing audiology services and auditory verbal therapy for patients with hearing loss. The overarching of the responsibility of the Implantable Technologies Audiology Supervisor is to ensure safe delivery of the highest quality of audiological care and service excellence to patients and their families, healthcare providers and other healthcare stakeholders across the enterprise.

Supervision and Staff Management:

  • Direct supervision and direction given to clerical staff, Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists who practice in the cochlear implant program   
  • Clinical and clerical staff selection, on-boarding, scheduling, evaluation and performance planning, professional development, attendance, and discipline.
  • Maintain documentation of competency for all staff in relevant areas
  • Regularly analyze staff requirements and patterns of staffing based upon needs and benchmarking data.
  • Provide oversight and act as point for onboarding and orientation of both clinical and administrative staff in collaboration with Audiology Manager and Audiology Division Chief.

Clinical Operations:

  • Oversee and regularly analyze/improve clinic workflow including referral management, scheduling, check-in, check-out, in basket management, supply, and inventory management
  • Develop and maintain clinical protocols and oversee clinical practice of providers working with implantable technologies, ensuring the highest quality of care and standardization across the practice.
  • Direct the use of facilities including booth utilization and space allocation.
  • Develop and maintain scheduling decision trees for the implantable technology program.
  • Oversee and develop policies and collaborate with other leaders to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Manage process for patients to obtain upgraded implant equipment.
  • Work with implant vendors in accordance with Vendor policies and in partnership with Contracting to purchase, maintain and troubleshoot equipment.
  • Partner with Hearing Technologies Manager, Audiology Manager, and Audiology Division Chief to develop strategic goals for the implantable technologies program and align operations of program across all ACUs where implantable technology services are delivered. Provide input for the Audiology Program?s operational plan and translate into section specific strategic planning.
  • Oversee and develop processes to track patients from initial evaluation through surgery, including working to develop and oversee the process to assign patients to physicians for surgery,
  • Regularly review processes to ensure on-going compliance with Michigan Medicine operational principles.
  • Accountable for achieving designated performance metrics and objectives in partnership with Medical Director, Audiology Manager,  and Audiology Division Chief

Communication and Patient Care/Safety Oversight:

  • Participate in monthly audiology leadership meetings with Audiology Division Chief and other audiology leaders
  • Share patient satisfaction data with Audiology Manager and present data as requested
  • Address concerns and complaints received through Patient Relations and Clinical Risk, collaborating with Audiology Manager as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Audiology Manager to develop and oversee policies to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction including analysis of patient and family feedback and corresponding action plan development and implementation
  • Address and follow-through with patient/family feedback and complaints including implementation and ongoing evaluation of appropriate process improvements
  • Collaborate with Audiology Manager to develop and oversee policies to ensure safety within the clinic (including physical structure and emergency readiness) and service line.
  • Financial Responsibility and Fiscal Oversight:
  • Prepare, monitor, and manage billing and other fiscal activities including the monitoring of charges and collections, and initiate corrective action where needed.'
  • Develop annual section financial plan, identifying cost savings opportunities and track progress and variances to plan.

Leadership and Development:

  • Actively participate in setting Audiology Program priorities in collaboration with audiology leadership.
  • Implement/operationalize the program missions and plan within the Implantable technologies Section
  • Act as a resource for items such as troubleshooting, quality improvement ideas, initiatives, and pilots as they relate to the section
  • Provide feedback for annual performance reviews and development of staff
  • Manage personnel difficulties/disagreements/miscommunication
  • Promote provider adherence to applicable policies and standards
  • Support the mission and principles of the audiology program in the administration of leadership duties
  • Participate actively and provide data, action planning and other administrative leadership to the bi-monthly Audiology Program operations meeting
  • Identify opportunities for quality improvement, and carry forward quality improvement including leading and attending Gembas
  • Implement evidence-based clinical practice within the section and service line.
  • Develop and implement clinical programs to increase patient satisfaction and improve patient outcomes
  • Manage training and education for clinical staff
  • Provide clinical collaboration to lend rehabilitation expertise to research and academic effort
  • Other duties as assigned

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Audiologic and rehabilitative management of patients with implantable hearing devices (cochlear implants and bone conduction devices)
  • Successful maintenance of a busy clinic schedule at various locations; travel to satellite locations may be expected with this position
  • Proficient documentation using electronic medical record (Epic) and various audiology-specific software is required
  • Active participation in case conferences, team meetings, departmental meetings, and outreach efforts.
  • Doctorate degree in Audiology
  • Current State of Michigan Audiology License (or eligible)
  • Able to successfully complete Michigan Medicine provider credentialing
  • Clinical expertise in implantable technologies, including experience working directly with pediatric and adult cochlear implant recipients 
  • Knowledge of audiology operations
  • Previous leadership and/or supervisory experience in a health care setting
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.

  • 2-3 years of supervisory experience is desired
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC)
