Overview:
As a Commercial Underwriter, you will play a vital role in managing a portfolio of business, focusing on both profitability and growth. You will assess risks for new and renewal business, prepare quotes, and respond to coverage inquiries within your assigned authority. Building successful relationships with agents will be key to driving positive business flow. In this role, you'll work with limited supervision and have the opportunity to exercise your independent judgment. Depending on the requirements of the role and your location, this position may be offered as hybrid or remote.
Key Responsibilities:
- Achieve profitable outcomes on less complex niche business through effective risk selection by:
- Analyzing, selecting, and pricing business profitably with clear terms and conditions of coverage.
- Reviewing inspection reports, locations, risks, financial data, and other available resources to identify any new or unresolved issues.
- Collaborating with Risk Control for inspections, follow-ups, and service needs for insured clients.
- Implementing corrective actions or remediation strategies for renewal accounts.
- Timely escalating referrals for accounts requiring additional review or approval from senior underwriters.
- Ensuring compliance with service expectations and regulatory standards by promptly releasing renewals, non-renewals, and conditional notices.
- Strive to achieve key performance indicators for your portfolio by:
- Developing and nurturing strong relationships with distribution partners through regular portfolio review calls.
- Aligning with the voice of the customer guidelines.
- Occasionally traveling to partner offices to enhance relationships.
- Coordinating with the distribution team to build pipelines, address concerns, and manage changes effectively.
- Maintaining open communication with team members about the health of assigned agencies and market conditions that may affect the portfolio.
- Cultivate a High-Performing Culture by:
- Providing superior customer service and demonstrating strong business acumen.
- Mentoring support staff throughout their career development.
- Conducting peer audits and approving underwriting decisions for associates at lower authority levels.
- Assisting in training new hires and providing ongoing mentoring and feedback to support employee growth.
- Reviewing and approving referrals for associates with lower authority levels.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, or a related field is preferred.
- Holding or pursuing an insurance designation (e.g., CPCU, IIA) is preferred.
- Three years of progressively responsible experience in commercial underwriting, including one to two years in a property and casualty insurance environment.
Recommended Qualifications:
- Broad knowledge of common terms, practices, processes, and regulations in the property and casualty (P&C) insurance industry.
- Ability to consistently apply advanced underwriting concepts and practices.
- Strong negotiation skills, sound judgment, and reasonableness in analysis and decision-making.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying clear and concise information.
- Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong customer service orientation and attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel (e.g., pivot tables, v-lookups) for strategic analysis.
- Organizational skills with the ability to manage a large workload and meet tight deadlines.
Compensation:
- $48,600 - $81,000 based on experience, plus eligibility for bonuses.
- $53,400 - $89,000 based on experience in CA, CT, MA, NJ, NY, and PA, plus eligibility for bonuses.
