Position Summary The Compliance Investigator at Weill Cornell Medicine plays a critical role in ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and institutional policies by conducting comprehensive investigations into compliance and patient-related complaints reported to the Compliance Office. This position focuses on identifying root causes, mitigating risks, drafting policies, and supporting incident response efforts to prevent future issues, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of the Weill Cornell Medicine Compliance Program.
Job Responsibilities - Independently and collaboratively (as needed) conduct investigations to determine the root causes of complaints and inquiries, while maintaining confidentiality to protect the integrity of the process.
- Work closely with other departments (e.g., Legal, HR, IT, RM) to ensure a coordinated approach to compliance and investigations.
- Perform timely and appropriate interviews and meetings in response to complaints and inquiries. Escalate urgent issues to the Executive Director and Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer immediately.
- Collaborate with external regulatory bodies, auditors, and other organizations as needed to support investigations and compliance efforts.
- Prepare accurate, complete, and factual documentation to support investigation findings.
- Author clear and concise investigative reports that can withstand regulatory scrutiny and provide sufficient detail to support findings and corrective actions.
- Maintain organized and complete investigative notes and files within the Compliance Office incident reporting database. Leverage technology and investigative tools to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of investigations.
- Ensure timely follow-up and communication regarding all investigation activities, including patient interactions, interviews, research, and workforce interactions.
- Close all investigations and respond to inquiries in accordance with the Compliance Office standards and regulatory deadlines.
- Provide weekly, monthly, and annual metrics and reports on investigation activities.
- Prepare summary findings for various stakeholders, including clinical departments, HR, Faculty Affairs, and Legal.
- Track and ensure consistency and accuracy of investigation procedures across WCM. Conduct periodic quality reviews of completed investigations to ensure adherence to standards and identify areas for improvement.
- Track trends, recommend workflow updates, and suggest improvements to enhance compliance and address non-compliance issues. Document best practices and lessons learned from investigations to build organizational knowledge and improve future practices.
- Keep abreast of changes in relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards. Ensure that investigations and compliance practices remain current and aligned with new requirements.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education - Bachelor's Degree in related field
- Master's Degree preferred
Experience - Approximately 5-7 years of investigation experience required, preferably in healthcare, and/or compliance within an academic medical center setting.
- Approximately 5-7 years of experience working with patients on patient complaints.
- Proven experience with investigative techniques and documentation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Working knowledge of Federal and State healthcare program requirements and/or knowledge of investigation, clinical, legal, auditing, or other compliance experience.
- In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements and institutional policies.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to operate within, and contribute to, a collaborative environment.
- Strong analytical skills, ability to collect information from diverse sources, interpret and apply regulations, policy and legal principles.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strength in empathic communication.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Able to handle confidential and sensitive information with integrity and discretion.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations and develop effective solutions.
Licenses and Certifications - Certification in Compliance preferred.
