If you have an interest in work ensuring that the requirements of environmental permits and laws are followed, you may want to join the compliance team in the DEC Solid Waste Program. Integrity, good judgment, people skills, and the ability to evaluate, document, and communicate violations ‐ and how to correct them ‐ in person and in writing will be required.
This position directly helps protect human health and the environment and helps ensure all Vermonters have access to recycling services. You will be conducting solid waste facility inspections and investigating complaints throughout the state. The compliance section is also responsible for enforcing landmark solid waste legislation, such as Vermont's Universal Recycling law, Single-Use Products law, and the Extended Producer Responsibility laws for batteries, paint, electronics, mercury products, and most recently, household hazardous waste.
Following up on site visits, preparing inspection reports, reviewing submitted reports, and tracking permit expirations require office work. You will also be preparing notices of alleged violation and tracking their resolution. Some violations will require that you prepare citation or case referrals for formal enforcement. Solid waste or compliance experience is helpful but not required.
A good candidate for this job would enjoy their work even when delivering unwelcome news and would have a strong ability to track details and follow through on correction of compliance issues. You will be expected to do so in a fair, consistent, and professional manner, whether in the field or in the office, or as is occasionally required, in court.
This position is based in Montpelier and has the opportunity for telework with supervisor approval.
Applicants should submit a cover letter with their resume.
This position, Environmental Analyst III - Solid Waste Compliance Inspector (Job Requisition #51172) , is open to all State employees and external applicants.

Please note that multiple positions in the same work location may be filled from this job posting.
Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available.
