Pay will be determined based on location of selected individual. Anchorage salary: $24.26 Fairbanks salary: $24.99 What You Will Be Doing This permanent, full-time position with the Water Quality team at the Department of Environmental Conservation primarily focuses on assisting with planning and conducting stream surveys in the remote Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim area of Alaska. This exciting new program aims to quantify aquatic habitat condition in the region using established methods. We are looking for a team member interested in remote field work, aquatic resource surveys, working with large datasets and learning about water quality in Alaska.
Our Organization, Mission, And Culture The Division of Water, Water Quality group is a unique program within the Department of Environmental Conservation. We work to improve and protect Alaska's waters in many ways, including developing water quality standards, addressing non-point source pollution, assessing surface water quality, assisting with quality assurance, and developing regulations for and reviewing onsite wastewater systems. We are a small, tight knit group of scientists passionate about what we do.
The Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment (WQMA) Program works to meet DEC's mission by designing and conducting water quality and related sampling projects, analyzing the data generated, providing data quality training and growing our capacity for data management. The work of WQMA spans many diverse fields such as law, statistical analysis, data science, hydrology, aquatic ecology, chemistry, and public engagement; and involves extensive data quality management and use of analytical and software tools such as R and GIS.

You'll have opportunities to work on remote logistics, aquatic habitat surveys, data processing, use of cutting edge tools, as well as working in beautiful and rugged parts of the state that are difficult to access.

The Working Environment You Can Expect You may work in either the Anchorage or Fairbanks DEC office. In the winter most work will be in an office, in the summer frequent remote field campaigns of 5-15 days each would be expected. You'll primarily be working with 5 other staff members in the WQMA program that are located in Fairbanks, Anchorage and Soldotna.
We are looking for a candidate that has experience in the following areas: - Interpersonal Skills: Treats others with courtesy, sensitivity, and respect. Considers and responds appropriately to the needs and feelings of different people in different situations.
- Research: Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.

- Manages and Organizes Information: Identifies a need; gathers, organizes, and maintains information; determines its importance and accuracy, and communicates it by a variety of methods.
Special Notice: During summer months requires frequent travel to remote (off the road system) locations to complete stream surveys, trips may be up to one month in length but will typically be 5-14 days.
Minimum Qualifications One year of advanced clerical experience in a resource management or resource development organization; environmental oversight or evaluation organization; or organization responsible for the transport or storage of hazardous materials where the clerical duties included identifying environmental requirements and explaining programs or services.
Substitution Post-secondary education from an accredited college in Environmental or Natural Resource studies; a physical, biological or natural science; planning; or engineering will substitute for the required experience (3 semester hours/4 quarter hours equal one month).
