Job Summary

The Public Health Laboratory is hiring a Sample Receiving Technician who will provide administrative support within the Environmental Section. In this position you will perform triage, sample entry and sample delivery for all incoming sample submissions to the laboratory. You will interact with clients submitting samples and help answer questions they have about our submission forms or sample drop off. Additionally, you will help prepare sample kits for distribution to sample collectors. This includes labeling sample containers, dispensing preservatives and packing containers for shipping. This position will work to cultivate an inclusive work environment for all, with respect to diversity and equity. This position supports the providing of analytical testing results to the partners of the Minnesota Department of Health for protecting, maintaining, and improving the health of all Minnesotans.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• One (1) year of experience working in databases, such as database entry or preparing data for database submittal.

Minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview process:

• Experience in database management sufficient to navigate Outlook, Microsoft Suite products, and provide technical support.
• Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety procedures.
• Attention to detail and strong organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple tasks to ensure work is completed in a timely manner and tasks are prioritized.
• Ability to communicate in a variety of formats to gather and relay information with tact and diplomacy.
• Analytical skills sufficient to understand and follow various laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs) and related documents accurately and consistently.

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences or related field may substitute for one year of experience; Associates degree may substitute for six months of experience; Master's degree may substitute for 18 months; PhD may substitute for 2 years.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associates or bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences or related field (e.g., chemistry, biology, clinical laboratory, ecology)
• Experience in a laboratory setting, environmental or clinical.
• Knowledge of computer scientific databases including laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
• Customer service skills sufficient to interact effectively to partners, vendors, and coworkers.
• Experience in assembly, packing and shipping.

Physical Requirements

Transportation of up to 50 pounds.
