Job Description

The City of Astoria's Parks & Recreation Department is seeking Fitness Instructors for group classes catering to a wide range of fitness levels. Classes will be held indoors in our weight room or outdoors in the recreation space at the Astoria Aquatic Center. The ideal candidate is reliable and brings energy and expertise to each class. Areas of expertise may include Yoga, CrossFit, or Cardio & Strength.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Fitness Instructor position is included in the Recreation Program Specialists job category. Individuals in this job category work in a variety of roles leading and supporting Parks & Recreation programs and activities including officiating youth and adult sports, leading fitness classes, and providing direct support, planning, and care in youth after-school and day camp programs. Additionally, this position may be assigned to support special events, such as Free Movies in the Park, Sports Tournaments, or other community activities as needed. Recreation Program Specialists are responsible for daily oversight of all participants in the programs and activities to ensure a safe and healthy environment is maintained at all times.

SCHEDULE

This is a part-time seasonal position from March through September 2025, re quiring up to 15 hours per week. Operating hours are typically between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM on weekdays, and 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on weekends and holidays. Programming hours will vary throughout the day.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plans and leads fitness classes for youth and adults.
  • Prepares, cleans and maintains facilities and equipment before and after use for ongoing and specialized programs, activities and events following checklists and training provided.
  • Assists with patron registration, check-in/check-out processes using the Department's recreation management software.
  • Monitors and engages with patrons during programs, activities and events to ensure safety including overseeing the use of facilities and equipment in compliance with City and other relevant rules and regulations.
  • Inventories supplies and essential items and communicates programmatic needs to Recreation Coordinator.
  • Provides technical oversight of sports programs, fitness classes, or childcare activities, depending on area of assignment.
  • Supports the Parks and Recreation Departments in preparation and delivery of ongoing and specialized programs, activities and events.
  • Assists in the implementation of goals and objectives of the Recreation Division, as defined by the Recreation Manager and Recreation Coordinator.
  • Communicates effectively with participants in assigned programs, provides information and assistance regarding general inquiries, programs, and schedules.
  • Assists with implementation and support of special events and community activities.
  • Assists in responding to emergency situations in the workplace by following established emergency action plans, providing First Aid/CPR as necessary, contacting appropriate agencies for support, and documenting incidents as they occur.
  • Keeps certifications current according to assigned role.
  • Inspects the condition of equipment and supplies for safety, proper operation, and maintenance needs; reports any repair or maintenance issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Takes attendance regularly and checks participants in; completes forms and reports relating to attendance, safety, and activities.
  • Drafts lesson plans, daily activities, and/or game schedules, depending on duties assigned.
  • Performs routine administrative duties utilizing a variety of office equipment; using software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, and database software in performing work assignments; utilizing automated recreation programs for patron registration, data collection, and analysis.
  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Maintains punctual, regular, and predictable attendance.
  • Maintains a neat and professional appearance and follows established dress code
  • Respectfully takes direction from the supervisor and lead staff.
  • Follows all safety rules and procedures established for various work areas.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines as described in the City of Astoria Personnel Manual and other documentation related to this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABLITIES

  • Ability to communicate effectively with youth, parents/guardians, community members, co-workers and supervisor verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions and program guidelines.
  • Advanced knowledge of sports rules and physical activities appropriate for children and adults.
  • Advanced knowledge of fitness disciplines including, but not limited to, any of the following: spin class, cardio kickboxing, TRX, Zumba, yoga, Pilates, weight training, aerobics, Jazzercise, dance.
  • Knowledge of safety and emergency procedures and ability to perform calmly and effectively under pressure in emergency situations.
  • Ability to take initiative and make independent decisions within the scope of authority.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes in program or routine.
  • Ability to enthusiastically plan and lead activities.
  • Ability to use recreation, childcare or other program-related software.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Minimum High School diploma or GED
  2. Must be 18 years or older
  3. Ability to pass a City-required background check which includes criminal, sex offender and social security trace records checks.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a current CPR/First Aid card or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of hire and the ability to maintain throughout employment.
  • Program Specialist - Fitness Instructor: Possession of certificate of completion from International Sports Sciences Association, or similar agency, within thirty (30) days of hire.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to communicate in English & Spanish
  • Training or certificates from an accredited agency related to Fitness instruction

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Staff may be required to work in a range of indoor and outdoor settings, such as classrooms, sports fields, gyms, swimming pools, and on paved or unpaved paths, depending on their assigned programs and scheduled activities. The noise level in these environments can vary from moderate to loud.
