Job Description

Position Overview
The School of Kinesiology, College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities is seeking outstanding candidates for a non-tenure-track, Lecturer (Academic Professional) position in the area of Sport Management. Specifically, we seek a candidate with expertise in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in sport finance, business, and economics. Candidates should also be able to teach across other areas of the sport management curriculum, such as data analytics, event and facility management, sport law, and/or diversity in sport. The professional instructional position is teaching focused with additional duties related to advising graduate student capstones and thesis, supervising undergraduate research projects, and service to the department, college, and university.  

Our sport management academic programs include approximately 200 undergraduate majors in the B.S. program, 80 undergraduate minors, and 60 graduate students in M.Ed., M.A., and Ph.D. programs. Complete information on the School can be found on the website:  

This position is based on campus. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager. 

Job Responsibilities

Teaching (75%)
  • Teach the equivalent of 6 courses per academic year (3 each fall and spring semesters, 2-4 credits per course)
  • Provide leadership to undergraduate curricula evaluation and innovation.
  • Teach core courses in the undergraduate programs including large lecture courses
  • Teach other Sport Management undergraduate and graduate courses as needed.
  • Develop and prepare course content, materials, and syllabi.
  • Instruct courses using diverse modes of delivery.
  • Evaluate student performance and grade student materials such as exams, papers, and projects. Respond to student inquiries and meet with students.
  • Supervise graduate teaching assistants.
  • Participate in on-campus professional development training relevant to teaching and learning. Develop partnerships that provide experiential learning opportunities for students 

Academic Support and Service (15%) 
  • Supervise field experiences and mentor students on career readiness.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in directed study, independent study, and honors program experiences.
  • Advise graduate students at the masterâ™s level.
  • Serve on graduate examining committees at the masterâ™s and doctoral level.

Professional/Institutional Service (10%)
  • Participate in school, college, and University service activities.
  • Serve on and lead departmental, college and University-wide committees and work groups as requested, assigned, or initiated.
  • Coordinate undergraduate and/or graduate programs.
  • Support colleagues in nomination for institutional awards via letters of nomination and recommendation.
  • Serve at the community, local, national, and/or international levels as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned PhD in Kinesiology, Sport Management, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience and effectiveness in higher education.
  • Expertise in sport finance, business, and economics 
  • Demonstrated strengths in writing and communication skills.
  • Commitment to service at the professional, university, departmental, and community levels.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with people from a variety of communities, backgrounds, and identities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and refereed presentations at professional conferences.
  • Ability to teach across other relevant areas in sport management, including data analytics, event and facility management, sport law, and/or diversity and sport. 
  • Experience in mentoring or advising undergraduate or graduate students.
