Job Description

Pet Place is seeking an experienced Pet Trainer to join our team and provide professional dog training services. In this role, you will design and implement training programs for dogs and cats of all ages and breeds, helping pets develop good behaviors and reinforce positive habits. The Pet Trainer will also be responsible for conducting group and private lessons, creating individualized training plans, and educating pet owners on how to work with their pets at home. The ideal candidate will have expertise in animal behavior and training techniques, along with a passion for working with pets and their families.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Training Programs: Develop and deliver personalized training programs for dogs and cats to address behavioral issues, obedience, socialization, and other training needs.
  • Group & Private Classes: Conduct group training sessions and one-on-one lessons with pet owners to teach obedience commands, proper leash walking, socialization skills, and other relevant skills.
  • Behavior Modification: Work with pets exhibiting behavioral problems (e.g., aggression, separation anxiety, fear-based issues) and design behavior modification plans.
  • Owner Education: Educate pet owners on training techniques, proper pet behavior, and reinforcement strategies to ensure consistency between training sessions and at-home practice.
  • Progress Tracking: Track and record each pet’s training progress, including improvements and challenges, and adjust training plans accordingly.
  • Safety & Well-Being: Ensure the safety of pets during training sessions and address any medical or behavioral concerns with management or veterinary staff as needed.
  • Facility Support: Assist with managing and organizing training spaces, cleaning equipment, and maintaining a safe training environment.
  • Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service by answering pet owners’ questions, addressing concerns, and offering training recommendations based on the pet’s needs.
  • Stay Current: Continuously update your knowledge of animal training techniques and behavioral science to provide the best service to pets and their owners.

Potential Job Hazards:

  • Loud Noises (Barking & Animal Sounds): The facility can be noisy due to barking dogs and other animal sounds, which may create a loud environment during training sessions.
  • Exposure to Allergens & Pet Dander: Exposure to pet allergens and dander from animals is common in the training environment.
  • Animal Handling: Some animals may have behavioral issues that require special handling. This may involve working with pets that display fear, aggression, or anxiety.
  • Cleaning Chemicals: Exposure to cleaning products and disinfectants used within the facility. Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: At least 1-2 years of professional experience in dog and/or cat training, with a strong understanding of animal behavior and various training techniques.
  • Training Certifications: Certification from a recognized dog training organization (e.g., CCPDT, IAABC) is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of positive reinforcement techniques, behavior modification, obedience training, and breed-specific traits.
  • Animal Handling: Ability to work with pets of all sizes, breeds, and temperaments, including those with behavioral challenges.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to explain training concepts clearly to pet owners.
  • Customer Service: Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with clients and pets.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, walk, and engage in active training sessions for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to assess behavioral issues and develop customized training plans to address them.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, as required.
