Role Summary

The Sr. Metrology Engineer will develop and maintain relationships with engineering, and metrology customers to address metrology requirements. Responsible to communicate results and solutions in an effective manner for metrology projects. Provide metrology support for engineering, quality and manufacturing in measuring. Track metrology and inspection projects and report on status. In this position, you will provide critical support for all metrology activities including programming, validating, and troubleshooting Coordinated Measuring Machines (CMMs) as well as other automated geometric measurement equipment.


Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain automated, production-ready programs for dimensionally inspecting parts and assemblies using Zeiss Calypso and Klingenberg P26 software.
  • Dimensionally inspect parts using a variety of metrology equipment including vision systems, CMM and 3D laser and blue light scanners
  • Support the development of methods to analyze product and process quality.
  • Analyze data to define trends, capability, and functional improvements.
  • Work together with relevant teams and departments to understand the needs regarding problem-solving.
  • Formulate a strategic plan to develop systems and metrics that increase productivity in the business.
  • Develop novel methods to accurately and precisely measure automotive components and assemblies.
  • Accurately read and interpret drawings and CATIA CAD models.
  • Lead standardization and optimization of production measurement methods and techniques
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of operational documentation.
  • Improve product/process quality by defining/implementing recommendations for improvements of the current state.
  • Perform other functions as required.
  • Potential business travel to support product/process/system development at Rivian company locations

Qualifications

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Develop, validate, and incorporate Calypso programming for all aspects of Castings, Gears, lamination stacks and sub-assemblies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency utilizing surface plates, sine plates, and height stands (including compound angles)
  • Analyze measurement data against process or design limits, assess trends, and take appropriate actions.
  • Demonstrated high proficiency in programming GMM gears
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of GD&T.
  • Experience with CATIA or similar CAD software for design.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Manufacturing/assembly experience with a focus on one or more of the following areas: Automotive Stamping, Body in White assemblies/subassemblies, Drivetrain castings/gears, Battery modules
  • Results driven with a Quality Mindset.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good electronic communication software skills (MS Office, Smartsheet, Project Management Software).
  • Willingness to work in a strong cross-functional and collaborative environment
  • Engineering, Quality, Computer Science or Business Technical Bachelor-Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Or 5+ years’ experience in an automotive manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret company needs in order to make value-added views of the data.
  • Ability to read blueprints, GD&T, and models with dimensions and GD&T embedded.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of internal customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete or imprecise variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to communicate in a high-pressure environment.
