What is the position?


This entry-level position is suitable for new graduates and veterinarians transitioning from clinical practice with a strong interest in public health, as well as those already established in regulatory practice, industry, or academia. As a Veterinarian (General), you will assist with the development of antimicrobial stewardship guidelines and best management practices for California livestock, conduct in-person and/or virtual presentations to livestock producers and licensed veterinarians, and serve as a key member of the stewardship unit within the Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship (AUS) branch. Due to the high-profile nature of AUS, you must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to think on your feet while using tact and good judgment, strong analytical skills, and the ability to develop and foster good working relationships.


What will you do?


• Assist with development, implementation, and evaluation of outreach, education, and communication efforts, including in-person and/or virtual talks and social media messaging. Make recommendations to the Research Scientist Supervisor II and Veterinarian Specialist on promoting effective strategies for outreach and education.


• Plan, organize, and coordinate Stewardship-related events for California livestock producers and provide technical assistance to local veterinarians.


• Work with the California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) Laboratory, industry stakeholders, and other federal and State agencies to develop antimicrobial stewardship resource materials.


• Assist branch staff with the preparation of reports, newsletters, presentations, agency correspondence, and management updates.


• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, industry partners, specialists, and university researchers.


• Research scientific literature related to antimicrobial use, resistance, and stewardship and identify knowledge gaps and/or opportunities for further programmatic study. Review professional journals to expand and maintain knowledge and expertise. Serve as a State resource for programmatic issues.


• Review, apply, and enforce laws, regulations, and policies of the Department and of various local, State, and Federal government agencies in all aspects of assigned duties.


• Keep up-to-date on state and federal legislative landscapes surrounding food animal industries and contribute to analyses of relevant policies supporting the sustainability of food animal veterinary medicine.

Working Conditions

Where will you work?


Although most work will occur in an office environment or at home, you may, on occasion, work outdoors on farms, feedlots, and/or in other animal industry facilities and be exposed to unpleasant odors associated with livestock animals.


Additionally, a combination of overnight travel and/or virtual attendance is required to accomplish the duties previously noted, as you will conduct presentations, participate in meetings, and attend conferences in both virtual and in-person formats.


Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbent’s ongoing regular schedule in accordance with CDFAs Telework Policy, which also currently includes 2 days/week in a non-telework setting.

What are the Licensing requirements?


Possession of a valid driver’s license of the appropriate class issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles and a valid license issued by the Veterinary Medical Board (VMB) for the State of California to practice as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. [Applicants who do not yet possess a valid California DVM license but who are in the process of obtaining a license to practice Veterinary Medicine in California may be appointed but must secure the required license within 12 months of the date of appointment.]

•  A starting salary that currently ranges from $6,669.00 - $10,513.00 per month with regular merit-based increases possible, dependent on starting level.
