We are excited to announce opportunities for Teaching Assistants to join our team in Biddeford, Portland, and Saco. Our program is dedicated to supporting academically low-performing students in grades Pre-K through 5th at 11 elementary schools in Southern Maine. Through engaging, hands-on engineering design challenges, students develop vital skills for academic success, including confidence, initiative, problem-solving, communication, and perseverance. Our collaborative identification process involves Directors, Site Coordinators, and school staff to ensure eligible students receive the support they need. We are proud to offer this program, primarily funded through, in partnership with local school departments.
About the Role:
As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting our teachers and Site Coordinator in implementing a four-day program focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum, along with enrichment activities covering health and wellness, cultural education, and social-emotional learning.
In addition to program hours, you will have opportunities to participate in essential pre-program planning, staff meetings, and professional development activities. This is a part-time, fixed-term position for the school year.
Key Responsibilities:
Collaborate with a team to plan remote or in-person STEAM curriculum and enrichment activities that connect with students' prior knowledge, interests, and experiences, aligning with the school-day curriculum.
Assist with instruction under the guidance of Site Directors while adhering to safety and health protocols.
Foster a physically and emotionally safe, structured, and organized learning environment for all students.
Build positive relationships with students, modeling and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices—personal, social, and academic. Provide support during student behavior challenges as needed.
Reinforce clear and positive expectations for learning and behavior that complement those in the elementary school setting.
Employ best practices to achieve grant goals and uphold the program's mission.
Participate in weekly team meetings to discuss program delivery, identify needs, reflect on experiences, and set goals for improvement.
Engage in required professional development training to enhance your skills.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Site Coordinator or Directors.
Maintain professionalism at all times, adhering to program expectations and online safety guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications:
State of Maine Ed Tech Certification or demonstrated experience and ability in a related field.
An Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree in Education or a related field is preferred.
Work Experience & Skills:
Experience working with elementary-aged youth is preferred.
A genuine enthusiasm for learning and a passion for inspiring the same in children.
Experience with diverse communities and low-performing populations is preferred. Experience working with English Language Learners is a plus for certain sites.
Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
Familiarity with various technologies, including Microsoft Outlook, Google Drive Suite, and Zoom.
Flexibility, thoughtfulness, and a creative approach to problem-solving.
A growth mindset with a willingness to learn and apply innovative educational methods.
Proven ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
