Position Summary

The Indiana University School of Public Health‐Bloomington (SPH‐B) invites applications for a tenure-track/tenured faculty position in the Department of Kinesiology. Applicants at the associate or full professor rank are a priority, although all ranks are welcome to apply. We seek individuals passionate about our mission to promote health for all members of society through excellence in research, impactful teaching and mentoring, and service to the university, profession, and the community. This 10‐month appointment would ideally start August 1, 2025, although an earlier or later start date is negotiable. Overview: A member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU) since 1909, Indiana University Bloomington prides itself in offering outstanding academics grounded in contemporary educational offerings, world class research, and a vibrant campus life. The SPH-B, located in the heart of campus, is comprised of over 200 faculty across five departments and is one of the most diverse faculties of any school of public health in the nation, with 39% of current tenure-track/tenured faculty being scholars from traditionally underrepresented minority groups. In 2022 and 2023, Indiana University Bloomington was honored with the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award. Continuing the momentum of hiring over 60 outstanding tenure-track/tenured faculty over the last two years, the SPH-B is launching another wave of faculty recruitment.

The Department of Kinesiology recently celebrated its 75th Anniversary and has consistently been highly ranked by the National Academy of Kinesiology. The Kinesiology faculty is a talented, productive, and collegial team, united by a shared interest in creating and translating knowledge in human movement science and practice, and sport management. Our exercise science faculty conduct research within the areas of exercise physiology (basic and applied/clinical), neuromotor control and biomechanics, athletic training, and physical activity behavior. With Kinesiology being one of the largest departments at Indiana University Bloomington, our faculty educate, mentor, and serve ~2,900 students enrolled in our BS, MS, and PhD degree programs. The Department of Kinesiology has effective collaborations with other departments in the SPH-B and other units at Indiana University.

Basic Qualifications

Qualifications: Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Kinesiology, exercise science, or a closely related field (e.g., biomedical engineering, physiology, psychology, medicine, biology, etc.) from an accredited educational institution. A firm commitment to the role of diversity and inclusion in all aspects of research, education and service is essential. A successful candidate must demonstrate a record of research and scholarly achievement appropriate for rank. Specifically, a mid-to-senior career level candidate must have garnered extramurally funded research as a corresponding principal investigator, have current funding or strong potential to secure external funding, and experience leading sizeable research programs. Candidates should also have teaching experience, preferably at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Good interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively and congenially within a diverse faculty are essential.

Responsibilities and Opportunity: Tenure-track/tenured faculty members in the Exercise Science Program in the Department of Kinesiology are expected to substantially contribute to the overall academic excellence of our mission by developing and/or maintaining a robust research portfolio including pursuing and obtaining major extramural research funding to conduct cutting-edge research in public health science both as a corresponding principal investigator and a collaborating investigator; teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate and/or graduate level as designated by the department chairperson; and actively providing service internally to the department, school and university and externally to the profession and/or the community.


Although all applicants with research expertise related to exercise and/or movement science will be considered, candidates within the following research areas are especially encouraged to apply; a) exercise psychology, b) brain health, cognition and neuroscience, c) biomechanics, and d) motor control. Preference will be given to applicants with research strengths in areas that are synergistic with other SPH-B and Indiana University faculty members and align with major funding priorities. This position is located on the Indiana University Bloomington campus, and successful candidates are expected to work on the Bloomington campus to allow full engagement with the department, school, campus, and community.
