Job Description Title : Unix Systems Administrator
Location : Miami
Type : Contract - 7 months
The Unix Systems Administrator’s role is to support and maintain in-house Unix and Linux computer systems, appliances, and peripherals. This includes provisioning, installing, configuring, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading all flavors of Unix and Linux Operating Systems, hardware, and equipment related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. This individual ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, infrastructure applications and related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff, volunteers, and partners. Individual is also responsible for complying with SOX and NERC security regulations and to respond to audit inquiries.
Responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining computing infrastructure, operating systems, and/or middleware products on all server platforms in support of 24 X 7 business processes. He/she evaluates, implements, and modifies operating system software parameters and/or product solutions for optimum performance. This individual identifies integration and other interface requirements for all supported products and platforms.
Job Responsibilities - Work with end users to identify and deliver required server service levels.
- Liaise with end users and staff on server operation and other issues.
- Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot servers, networked peripheral devices, and networking hardware products.
- Perform on site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex server problems and recommend and implement corrective hardware and/or software solutions.
- Receive and respond to incoming calls, pages, and/or e-mails regarding server and/or hardware problems.
- Monitor and test server performance
- Accurately document instances of hardware and software failure, repair, installation, and removal.
- Construct, install, and test customized configurations based on various platforms and operating systems.
- Evaluate and recommend hardware products for purchase.
- Write technical specifications for purchase of server hardware and related products.
- Recommend, schedule, and perform server OS improvements, upgrades, and repairs.
- Assist in developing long-term strategies and capacity planning for meeting future computer hardware needs.
- Support development and implementation of new server projects and new hardware installations.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of hardware and equipment contracts and supervise contract-based installations.
- If necessary, liaise with third-party support and server equipment vendors.
- Aid in development of business continuity and disaster recovery plans, maintain current knowledge of plan executables, and respond to crises in accordance with business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
- Provide guidance to junior members of the team as required.
- Provide guidance to business unit liaisons with application integration and deployment as it relates to the domain infrastructure.
- Provide guidance to business unit liaisons with application deployment to the internet as it relates to network security, availability and redundancy.
- Monitor and maintain infrastructure related to network connectivity to remote devices
- Serve as cornerstone for escalating server issues; provide timely response to customer escalations.
- Perform file system configuration and management; define and perform server backups and recovery procedures.
- Plan and implement server upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied patches.
- Create shell scripts as required.
- Manage enterprise directory services and supporting server infrastructure.
Position Qualifications / Requirements - College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science and/or 5 or more years of equivalent work experience.
- Working technical knowledge of server hardware, including IBM Power systems.
- Excellent technical knowledge of UNIX server operating systems, including IBM AIX and Linux.
- In-depth experience configuring and supporting UNIX virtualization technologies that include IBM PowerVM and VMware.
- Experience with server performance tuning and monitoring tools.
- Working technical knowledge of scripting code using Perl, CGI, and C, shell, scripting tools.
- Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining all manners of server hardware and associated network equipment, including SCSI, RAID, and I/O topology.
- General knowledge of storage technologies such as SAN or NAS, as well as Active Directory/Global Catalogue.
- Business process and reengineering experience, as well as an understanding of the relationship between processes and policies.
- Experience in clustering and/or high availability solutions that include IBM PowerHA.
- Hands-on hardware and OS troubleshooting experience.
- Working technical knowledge of current network protocols, SAN Infrastructure, firewall management and backup/restore solutions
- Able to read and understand technical manuals and procedural documentation.
- Ability to conduct research into server issues and products as required.

- Strong written and oral communication skills.
