Licensed Surgical Assistant (LSA)

About the Position

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Licensed Surgical Assistant (LSA) to join our surgical team in Houston, Texas . This role is essential in supporting surgeons throughout various procedures, ensuring the highest level of patient care, safety, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of surgical procedures, demonstrate excellent technical skills, and work collaboratively with the surgical team to optimize patient outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities

• Preoperative Duties:

  • Assist in patient preparation, including positioning, draping, and site preparation, in accordance with procedural and safety standards.
  • Ensure all necessary surgical instruments and equipment are prepared and readily available for procedures.
  • Conduct preoperative briefings with the surgical team to review case details and procedural requirements.

• Intraoperative Support:

  • Provide direct surgical assistance to the operating physician, including tissue handling, retraction, hemostasis, and suturing.
  • Utilize advanced surgical techniques and instrumentation to facilitate efficient and precise procedures.
  • Maintain a sterile environment throughout the procedure, adhering to strict aseptic techniques and infection control protocols.
  • Monitor and respond to intraoperative needs, adjusting support as necessary to ensure seamless surgical flow.

• Postoperative Responsibilities:

  • Assist in patient stabilization and transfer from the operating room to the recovery area.
  • Ensure proper documentation of surgical procedures, including detailed intraoperative notes and case reports.
  • Participate in debriefings to assess procedural outcomes and identify areas for improvement.
  • Oversee the cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment.

Required Qualifications & Licensure

• Must hold a valid and current Texas Surgical Assistant License (LSA) issued by the Texas Medical Board (TMB) .
• Certification from a recognized accrediting body such as the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA) or the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) is required .
• Active Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association (AHA) or equivalent.
• Minimum of 1-3 years of direct surgical assisting experience in a hospital or outpatient surgical center.
• Proficiency in various surgical specialties, including but not limited to orthopedic, cardiovascular, neurosurgery, general surgery, and minimally invasive procedures .

Preferred Skills & Competencies

• Strong technical proficiency in surgical instrumentation and procedural techniques.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
• Knowledge of OSHA, HIPAA, and JCAHO compliance regulations related to surgical practice.
• Ability to anticipate surgical needs and respond quickly to changes during procedures.
• High level of professionalism, integrity, and commitment to patient safety and quality care.
